Tutors at TASC are SFSU students who are passionate about teaching and learning and are knowledgeable in their fields. Throughout the semester, tutors

  • Provide tutorial support services for SF State students in one-on-one appointments and drop-in sessions.
  • Attend paid weekly education meetings facilitated by TASC faculty

The following documents are required as part of the application packet:

  • Current resume with relevant work experience and completed coursework
  • Cover letter that details why you're interested in becoming a tutor at TASC
  • Unofficial transcripts to verify enrollment at San Francisco State University 
  • Writing sample from GWAR/upper division course (reading/writing tutors only)
  • Faculty referral is preferred from instructors who can attest to skills/abilities

We begin accepting applications about a month before the semester ends and conduct interviews during finals week, and if we still have openings, at the beginning of the new semester. Apply through our Handshake page using the button below. About this Job

The Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) is a university-wide center that supports the academic success of all San Francisco State undergraduate and graduate students. TASC staff work with students in-person and online. TASC and the “Center” refer to both our in-person space in the library and our virtual spaces.
 

The Front Desk Student Assistant is responsible for providing administrative and reception support in-person and virtually during the academic school year. The student assistant will primarily assist students, faculty, visitors, and TASC Staff working the in-person front desk and the Zoom virtual reception.
 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact in TASC for inquiries from students, staff, faculty members, and the public via in-person, phone, email, and Zoom.
  • Provide information regarding TASC programs, policies and procedures.
  • Perform general office duties such as data entry, word processing, answering phone calls, scheduling appointments, and completing projects as assigned.
  • Report trends of customer service needs, and assist in the development of strategies aimed at better serving students.
  • Maintain a clean, well-organized, and welcoming atmosphere for customers in the front reception area.
     

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Work-Study eligible.
  • Must be a current SF State undergraduate or graduate student. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 units in the semester and graduate students must be enrolled in at least 4 units.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 8 hours of work per week.
  • Must be able to work in-person at the TASC Center (LIB 220).
  • Must be responsible, dependable, and flexible with a variety of assignments.
  • Must have strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Must have the ability to maintain professionalism while working under pressure and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

 

Hours of Work

  • TASC is open on campus and online. Check out the TASC website to see current hours. These hours may change from semester to semester.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 8 hours per week (not to exceed 20 hours/week).
  • Attend a mandatory paid, 1.5 hour weekly training session guided by a supervisor on Fridays from 2:00pm to 3:30pm.

The position may extend into the following semester upon receiving a positive evaluation.

Attend a paid, two-hour weekly training session guided by TASC faculty. 

There are other options for getting involved in TASC once you have worked with us for one semester: 

  • Serve as an embedded tutor, attending classes regularly, taking notes on class materials, participating in discussions by answering and asking questions, facilitating group breakout sessions, serving as a model student, and assisting students in tutorial sessions outside of the class environment. 
  • Become a student project lead, working collaboratively with other leads and TASC faculty and staff on projects that support SF State students, tutors, and instructors, upholding the center vision of creating equitable and welcoming environments so that everyone can learn.  

NOTE: Both work study and non-work study students are welcome to apply.

About this Job  

Tutors at the Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) are SF State students who are passionate about teaching, learning, and working with students to develop reading, writing, and academic study skills across all majors. Throughout the semester, tutors provide support in one-on-one scheduled appointments and drop-in sessions.  

Tutors receive paid training: a weekly training session facilitated by TASC faculty (Wednesdays 1-3 or Thursdays 10-12), an all-staff workshop on the first Saturday after the semester starts; and self-guided trainings for additional topics. Training is mandatory and begins in the first week of classes; new tutors start tutoring after the first month of training.

Qualifications  

  • Current SFSU student enrolled at least half time (6 units for undergrad / 4 units for grad)  
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher 
  • Must have successfully completed GWAR class (for undergrads) 

NOTE: Preference will be given to applicants who can make a year-long commitment and are able to work both in person and online. However, these preferences are not requirements, so we encourage you to apply regardless.
